Memorial services for animals who fought in World War I
Animals who participated in the service of the Australian security forces to war or regional conflict, received official recognition in a new event held at the War Memorial in Canberra.
Hundreds of people attended the memorial service for one full day to honor the role and services of the animals were assigned to war or conflict with local security forces Australia.
The memorial service at the same time showing off the greatness of the role of a number of animals such as the Australian cavalry in World War I, a herd of donkeys in battle; Gallipoli, messenger pigeons at Kokoda, and sniffer dogs were deployed in the assignment in Vietnam and Afghanistan wars.
At the war memorial mentioned there are about 13,000 Australian war horses that died on the battlefield in World War I.
Among the highly respected animal is Cougar, former SAS patrol dog belonging to police Mark Donaldson, VC.
Memorial Director, Brendan Nelson said the Cougar is one of five dogs that serve to the death of Australian soldiers in war assignment in Afghanistan over the past decade.
"Cougar shot in the face, legs, having three bullets into his chest. He then swam across the river, back to the leaders," he said.
"As an Australian civilians, we often forget the animals involved in the assignment of war by Australia,"
Pigeon racing fans Peter D'Arcy is one of the exhibitors and provides insight to the visitors about the story of the role of a dead pigeon rescue Australian soldiers in World War II.
"Pigeons were hit shot but he continued to fly a distance of 30 km in about half an hour," he said.
Board is considering a war memorial for the ceremony held each year.
